Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
