At least 64 Killed in Rio's Biggest Police Raid on Criminal Groups
No less than 64 individuals died in a police operation targeting the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's records.
Four security agents were among those killed during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities stated. Over 80 people were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes broke out when around 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday morning. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.
The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements near Rio's airport is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
Local authorities confirmed no less than 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Many residents were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Resident Accounts
Community members have likened the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.
Roads remain closed across the area.
Criminal Expansion
The criminal network has been increasing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.
Local law enforcement said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the operation, together with multiple guns.
Operation Background
The joint operation by civil and military police was preceded by a year-long investigation.
Many of the individuals are thought to be affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the city.
