Bluefin Tuna Sells for Record Sum of $3.2m at Tokyo Auction
A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the calendar year.
The top bid for the 243kg fish was placed by the operator of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which manages restaurants domestically and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna heralds fortune," stated the business owner, a notable figure at the yearly new year's auction.
Known as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is famous for placing substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent
After the auction, the winner told reporters that he was "astonished at the winning bid," noting, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed in no time."
This latest purchase surpasses his previous notable purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite previously commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record once again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously characterized by sky-high prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different food company, which stated the fish would be featured at its eateries nationwide.
The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter processed for diners at the winner's sushi restaurants soon after the auction ended.
"I sense like I've begun the year in a good way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," shared one happy diner.
