We are verifying video footage and photographs circulated this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site from which the images were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
