Mack Hansen produces stellar performance as Ireland respond to coach's challenge

The Irish player inspired Ireland to convincing win over Australia

Following their previous disappointing performance against the Japanese team, the head coach told his Ireland team to improve their game.

Ireland responded right away.

Ireland had struggled in the final stages against New Zealand and required considerable time to find their rhythm versus their Asian opponents.

Nevertheless, against Australia, they began powerfully, with Mack Hansen excelling brightest during a comprehensive triumph that represented the team's best display of the season.

In his debut test match appearance at the number 15 position, Hansen registered a hat-trick, contested excellently for aerial challenges and played outstandingly against the nation of his birth.

"You know, I've experienced a fairly challenging period with injuries honestly," the athlete stated.

"I longed for being in this team, I know there's considerable talk about me not exactly being raised here and I wasn't raised here, but I love this team and this feels like family.

"Whenever I have to represent for Ireland it's a privilege, if you fail to deliver a good showing you may not receive that opportunity again.

"My entire approach this period was to take the field and do what I can do."

Coach stated: 'Good players don't need justifications'

After 28 appearances on the wing, the player was entrusted the full-back role for the first time with multiple teammates unavailable.

For him, it was essentially a case of picking up where he left off during the warmer months.

The 28-year-old had been in superb condition before physical issues disrupted his dream of making the international squad.

Having come back last month, he developed a lower body injury that made him unavailable for earlier fixtures.

Farrell had suggested that the player was particularly motivated and these turned out to be not hollow words as the former club player gave his manager a welcome team headache for future games.

"So my first thoughts were, 'You better play well in those different coloured shoes!'," commented Farrell, referring to Hansen's choice to sport different boots.

"Actually I thought that was appropriate but apparently Mack just did that himself regardless. So he's drawn attention to himself before he's even started.

"I said to him before the game, 'Excellent players require no excuses, they can get on with it and just play naturally, you can win the player of the game if you choose,' and he went, 'Yes, I concur.'

"So he's that kind of performer, he prepares thoroughly, he's has a excellent approach to get across his preparation and so that's why he fitted straight back in and he was able to perform naturally due to that."

The player's efforts also earned praise from the rival coach, who remarked he was the "exceptional Australian performer" on the evening.

"I thought he was super, his knowledge was evident to the front," said the former international coach.

"Regrettably, Hansen was likely the best Australian player on the field. He's got a excellent skillset and he's such a good competitor."

Pressed about what enables Hansen a good fit at the number 15 position, the coach continued: "Appearing in the center of the field is something that he demonstrates from the wing anyway, but I suppose he's more in place for that frequently.

"His high ball work was excellent, wasn't it? I thought we persisted of doing the right approach and that was placing the ball again on them to gain territory.

"The reason that was the correct strategy to do is because it's the likes of Hansen who was getting the balls returned, and other teammates, so [it's] pretty pleasing."

Andy Farrell had called for an better performance from his team

Outside the star performer, there were numerous positives for the coach.

Sam Prendergast was outstanding on his comeback to the fly-half jersey, the set piece and throw-in operated smoothly and different teammate did not appear uncomfortable in his debut appearance in the front row.

But perhaps more satisfying for Farrell was the team bookending the game with multiple impressive spells.

Hansen's first two scores occurred in the opening eleven moments while additional teammates registered in the closing stages after the opposition had crossed, ensuring the home team finished on a positive note.

"I thought we truly let ourselves go and attacked the match straight from the beginning," said the coach.

"How we handled numerous elements during the game, especially the opposition responding just before the break and regathering ourselves and giving a display like we did in the later stages, I believed as far as field position and being familiar with most of our game in that second half was really pleasing."

The might of the Springboks are awaiting for the team, in what might be considered as an unofficial conclusion to the previous season's drawn two-Test series on rival soil.

The coach's team will need to attain a higher level to defeat the consecutive world champions, but Saturday's victory of the Australian team was a important advancement in the right direction after an disappointing beginning to their fall schedule.
