Offspring of Former South African Head of State Jacob Zuma Refutes Terrorism Allegations as Trial Begins
The child of former South African President Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror-linked charges at the start of her court case in the port city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over comments she published on social media several years back during violent demonstrations in South Africa that followed the detention of her father.
A seven-day period of chaos in various areas of the country in July 2021, including looting and fire-setting, left at least three hundred dead and resulted in damage worth an projected $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).
Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of encouraging this violence and confronts accusations of encouragement to commit terrorism and public disorder.
Context of the Case
The protests were centered in the areas of Gauteng region and KZN and followed the previous president's arrest for disobeying a court order to testify at an investigation into claims of corruption while he was in power.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has repeatedly refuted the charges against her, with her legal representative in the past labelling the prosecution's evidence as unsubstantiated.
She has also consistently claimed the charges against her were an attempt to address political grievances with her dad after he founded his own political party and campaigned against the ANC.
Endorsement and Court Representation
This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which said the case was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and family-related harassment" against the previous head of state and his family.
A handful of backers from her group, the political party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her father and other party leaders were present at the hearings inside.
Her legal team has argued that the proof presented by the state is unconvincing and lacks concrete proof for a guilty verdict.
