Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories constructed from the memories of the villain Henry. Their mission for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a moment that could contain the secret to his downfall for good.

The Discovery in the Cavern

When she finds Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

They watch a child version of Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the trauma wasn't just a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the truth about the encounter is detailed in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists took experimental components to give to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is understood of his research, the container almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the children Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back hours later as a different person. As a youth, he battles the control of a dark entity, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine highlights how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to fortify himself.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a critical advantage in the series finale that awaits.
