The Duke of York relinquishes his designation as York's Duke.

Royal figure under scrutiny
He has encountered increasing scrutiny over his associations with the financier.

Prince Andrew is surrendering his designations, such as the Duke of York, he has announced in a own words.

He has been under mounting attention over his links with convicted criminal Epstein, with calls for the Palace to take measures against him.

That now looks to have led to the figure deciding to voluntarily hand back his titles and to give up participation of the Garter Order.

In his announcement he said he continued to "vigorously dispute the allegations against me".

"In talks with the King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the ongoing allegations about me take away from the duties of the King and the Royal Family," said a statement from the royal.

"I have chosen, as I always have, to put my responsibility to my relatives and land first.

"I support my resolution five years ago to withdraw from official duties.

"With His Majesty's approval, we think I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the distinctions which have been bestowed on me. As I have said before, I strongly deny the allegations against me."

The royal has been involved in a number of issues, such as a court case he ended with an accuser, inquiries about his economic affairs and his association with an suspected intelligence operative.

He will continue to be a prince - but will cease to be the the Duke, a designation bestowed from his parent, the late Queen Elizabeth.

He had already stopped to be a "participating figure" and had lost the use of his HRH title and no longer appeared at official royal events. His status now will be even more lessened.

His former spouse will be known as Ferguson and no longer Duchess of York, but their daughters will continue to have the title of princess.

The royal has faced severe scrutiny over his connections with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, more lately featuring questions about when he had actually ended contact.

In his media discussion, he had said that he had ended all connections with Epstein after they had been pictured together in New York in December 2010.

But correspondence sent in early 2011 later came to light suggesting that he had in private remained in touch with the financier, for example exchanging a communication: "Stay in contact and we'll have further interactions soon!"

There had been growing displeasure in Buckingham Palace at the scandals that remained to surround the prince.

Soon a late publication by Giuffre will be published which is likely to draw more scrutiny on the royal's association with the plaintiff and Jeffrey Epstein.
