The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates club history in a key Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated the player after his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering the club's renowned youth academy.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
