The State of Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Tylenol Manufacturers Over Autism Spectrum Allegations

Courtroom Case
Ken Paxton, who supports former President Trump campaigning for US Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of concealing potential dangers of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Paxton is taking legal action against the makers of Tylenol, claiming the companies hid potential risks that the drug presented to children's neurological development.

This legal action arrives a month after President Donald Trump promoted an unproven link between taking acetaminophen - alternatively called acetaminophen - while pregnant and autism in children.

The attorney general is taking legal action against Johnson & Johnson, which previously sold the medication, the sole analgesic suggested for pregnant women, and Kenvue, which presently makes it.

In a declaration, he stated they "deceived the public by profiting off of suffering and pushing pills regardless of the risks."

Kenvue states there is lacking scientific proof connecting Tylenol to autism.

"These manufacturers lied for decades, knowingly endangering numerous people to increase profits," the attorney general, a Republican, said.

Kenvue commented that it was "very worried by the perpetuation of misinformation on the security of paracetamol and the potential impact that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its official site, the company also stated it had "consistently assessed the applicable studies and there is insufficient valid information that shows a established connection between taking paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder."

Groups representing physicians and health professionals agree.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has said paracetamol - the key substance in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for women during pregnancy to treat discomfort and fever, which can pose serious health risks if not addressed.

"In over twenty years of research on the use of paracetamol in pregnancy, no reliable research has conclusively proven that the use of paracetamol in any trimester of pregnancy results in neurological conditions in offspring," the group said.

This legal action references recent announcements from the previous government in arguing the medication is allegedly unsafe.

Recently, the former president raised alarms from public health officials when he told women during pregnancy to "fight like hell" not to use acetaminophen when sick.

Federal regulators then published an announcement that doctors should think about restricting the consumption of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a proven link" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in young ones has not been proven.

The Health Department head Robert F Kennedy Jr, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had pledged in spring to initiate "comprehensive study program" that would determine the source of autism spectrum disorder in a short period.

But experts advised that identifying a sole reason of autism spectrum disorder - believed by scientists to be the result of a complicated interplay of inherited and environmental factors - would not be simple.

Autism is a type of permanent neurological difference and impairment that influences how persons perceive and relate to the environment, and is diagnosed using medical professional evaluations.

In his lawsuit, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is seeking federal office - asserts the manufacturer and Johnson & Johnson "intentionally overlooked and sought to suppress the evidence" around paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder.

The case seeks to make the companies "remove any commercial messaging" that claims Tylenol is secure for pregnant women.

This legal action mirrors the complaints of a assembly of mothers and fathers of minors with autism and ADHD who took legal action against the producers of acetaminophen in recently.

The court threw out the case, declaring studies from the parents' expert witnesses was lacking definitive proof.
